Izmir Twitter Case

A court case was launched against 29 persons in connection with tweets they shared during Gezi Park demonstrations in 2013. The defendants were accused of violating relevant articles of Turkish Penal Code and Law on Meetings and Demonstrations. The indictment requested the defendants to be seneteced for “inciting people to civil unrest through social media” according to the Article 216 of TPC, “calling and inciting people for taking part in illegal demonstrations” according the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations. The defendants were detained during the Gezi Park demonstrations in İzmir for informing people about the developments through social media. But they were released afterwards.
